Truman Student Council and V.O.I.C.E. Make Holiday Joy a Reality for Families in Need

It has been a busy season of helping others for both Truman High School’s Student Council and V.O.I.C.E. (Variety of Individual Cultural Expressions).  First, students ensured that local families in need had food to eat for both Thanksgiving and Christmas by organizing a homeroom can contest. A total of 1647 food items were collected which surpassed last year's total of 1347 food items.

On Monday, November 23, eight families were given both the can goods that were collected, a turkey for their holiday meal and fresh groceries. Ten turkeys were donated by faculty members.   On Thursday, December 17 another eight families will be shopped for, as well as, given donated can goods.  Students from V.O.I.C.E. who are completing community service hours collected the food items from homerooms, kept track of each homeroom's donation, checked donations for expiration dates, sorted food items for storage, packed items for the families in need, and shopped for the families.  The money for the fresh groceries was raised through various fund raisers.

The second phase of this collaborative community service initiative focused on providing much-needed holiday gifts to youngsters. Through the Angel Tag program, the Salvation Army furnished Truman with a list of the gift needs for 100 individual children.  Each homeroom, as well as faculty members, got to work fulfilling the needs of these children through fundraising events and donations.  A mountain of toys began to grow at Truman as teachers and students took on the challenge of creating a happy holiday season for less fortunate kids.

These gifts are being picked up by the Salvation Army this week. There is no doubt that the hard work of both Student Council and V.O.I.C.E.  will bring smiles to 100 faces this year.
