Bristol Township School District Graduating Senior Meghan Brogan Wins National Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship
Harry S Truman High School Senior Meghan Brogan was recently awarded a $2,000 Washington Crossing Foundation scholarship.
The foundation gives annual scholarships to students who are planning careers in government service and have been inspired by the leadership of George Washington during the Dec. 25, 1776 crossing of the Delaware River. After graduation, Meghan will attend Air Force Basic and Technical Training to become a PA Air National Guard specialist in water fuels and maintenance. She plans to also pursue a degree in mathematics and is leaning toward an Air Force career.
“Living in Croydon, near the Delaware River, I’m constantly reminded of the steps George Washington took to establish this country and our rights,” Meghan said. “It means a lot to me, as great a president as he was, to be given an award in his honor.”
“Washington Crossing Foundation could not have found a more deserving honoree than Meghan,” said Bristol Township Superintendent Michael Nitti.
“Throughout her time at Truman, Meghan has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a commitment to serve others,” Mr. Nitti said. “Each month, her work ethic and poise were evident through her role as student representative to the Bristol Township School Board of Directors. Meghan also represented students on our Comprehensive Planning Steering Committee, bringing that important perspective to essential work that will shape our district’s goals for the next four years. She mentors freshman students as a member of our National Honor Society and has chaired multiple endeavors that promoted a strong school culture as a Student Council Treasurer and Class Officer.”
A key member of Truman’s award-winning DECA team and the school marching band, Meghan’s dedication to others and positivity also shine in the work she does outside of school. She has served as an officer of elections, an ambassador for Girl Scouts, and a Catechist and Lector for St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Her previous honors include the Heather MacHenry Citizenship Award and the Girl Scout Bronze Award.
“Meghan consistently demonstrates the best of the virtues and values that we expect from our students,” said Superintendent Nitti. “We are so proud of her, and look forward to celebrating her future accomplishments.”
The Washington Crossing Foundation awards multiple scholarships, and the one Meghan received honors Bristol resident and Foundation Trustee Martin Russell. Mr. Russell grew up on a family farm in Michigan. He joined the Marines in 1971. After serving, he moved to Pennsylvania where he and his wife Rose raised two daughters. Mr. Russell helped Ann Hutton with many projects at the home that is now the Foundation’s headquarters. The funding for this award was given by Charles and Kate Hutton Tweedy in his honor.
