Two Harry S. Truman High School seniors, Alicia Mohli and Giovanni Nigro, will continue on as Tigers at Princeton University in the fall. They both thank their teachers, counselors, friends, family and loved ones for supporting them throughout their journeys as Tigers becoming Tigers.
Alicia Mohli’s Path to Princeton
Princeton has been Alicia Mohli’s dream school for years.
“It’s close by, has a nice campus, and really focuses on undergraduate studies, which are extremely important for me,” she said. “Additionally, Princeton has one of the most generous financial aid programs in the country. I knew Princeton was the right fit choice for me based on the environment and its values.”
Although Princeton students don’t declare their majors until their sophomore year, Mohli plans to major in molecular biology with a pre-med path. She is working towards a medical career with the goal of becoming a doctor after she finishes her undergraduate and graduate studies.
“Truman offered a variety of challenging classes, extracurricular activities and opportunities that allowed my college application to Princeton to be unique,” said Mohli.
In addition to taking AP classes, Mohli was Vice President of the National Honors Society, a student ambassador of the Student Advisory Board, founder of the school’s newspaper, and a member of Key Club and VOICE club. Outside of school, she often volunteered locally, helping with children’s art and soccer classes. For anyone who aspires to attend an Ivy League school, Mohli encourages them to challenge themselves with AP classes and be involved in clubs and sports.
“I’m very excited about the high-quality education I’ll receive at Princeton, as well as the social aspect,” said Mohli. “I love meeting new people and can’t wait to do that at Princeton!”
Arts Program Attracts Giovanni Nigro to Princeton
Before choosing Princeton, Giovanni Nigro was deciding between the home of the Tigers or the Quakers at the University of Pennsylvania.
He admits he couldn’t go wrong with either decision, but says, “The tipping point came when Princeton sent me a pamphlet on their arts programs and I knew Princeton was the place for me. Plus, many great writers and artists emerged from Princeton, which I hope to be part of next.”
Nigro plans to major in humanities with a music minor, and work to earn certificates along the way.
“My goal is to become a lawyer for music and/or a playwright. Being a musician has also been a strong thought. The latter two are really my dream jobs, but my end goal is to achieve enough to become a lawyer,” he said.
Nigro is excited to find more people in college who want to create like him.
“It’s not often you hear about modern playwrights and composers, but I want to bring back the underground arts that challenge what we see as society,” he said. “Princeton is known for activism, too, so art with a purpose will definitely be on my roster.”
While at Truman, Nigro was very involved in Truman Drama, served as Vice President of his class, was a member on the Speech and Debate Team, and involved in every music program at the high school. He credits his experiences and teachers for showing him the intensity of college work, which challenged him to push harder.
“I am so proud to be a Truman student. Our district is ferocious and pervasive, just like our tiger mascot, in giving our community all they can,” said Nigro. “I am excited to tell people at Princeton that I come from Truman.”
